Yogyakarta Special Region (commonly called DIY) Province is located in the heart of Java Island and covers 3,185.80 km2. DIY boarders on the Indonesian Ocean in the south, and Central Java Province in three areas: north, east and west. Administratively, the province consists of 4 regencies (similar to a county): Kulonprogo, Bantul, Gunungkidul, and Sleman, and 1 city: Yogyakarta.
In 2005, this province had about 3,281,800 persons with its population growth of 1.88% and population density of 1,030 persons per km2.In 2005, the Gross Regional Domestic Products (PDRB) of the province reached Rp. 16.94 trillion. The sectors which contributed the biggest amount to this province were trade, hotels and restaurants reaching Rp. 3.46 trillion or 20.4% out of PDRBR of the province. This was followed by agricultural sectors (Rp.3.19 trillion, or 18.9%) and service sectors with the value of Rp. 2.85 trillion (16.8%).
In 2005, there were some leading commodities in the province. For example, the rice from wet land paddy and dry land paddy, cassava, peanuts and soybean. The potential plantation crops are coconut and cane.In the same year, DIY could reach a US$107.6 billion export, which was mostly contributed from cloth export, amounting US$45.1 billion.
This was followed by furniture valued at US$42.6 billion, tanned leather gloves and lamps.The economic development of DIY Province is underpinned by 2 (two) industrial estates located in Salamrejo area in Sleman regency and Piyungan area in Bantul regency. For air transportation, the province owns Adi Sutjipto Airport in Yogyakarta.
